Meet Mabel

A curious fox learning to listen, communicate, and speak up.

Mabel is a friendly green fox with hearing devices and a big curiosity about the world. Like many children with hearing differences, she is learning which tools help her hear, communicate, participate, and feel confident.

Mabel does not always understand everything the first time. Sometimes she asks someone to repeat themselves. Sometimes she watches a person’s face, moves closer, takes a listening break, or explains what she needs. Every experience helps her become a stronger listener and a more confident self-advocate.

Through stories, activities, and everyday adventures, Mabel helps children understand that hearing differently is simply one part of who they are.

Mabel’s Mission
Helping children feel informed, included, and confidentMabel’s mission is to make conversations about hearing differences easier for children and families. She introduces important ideas in a calm, encouraging, and child-friendly way.Along the way, Mabel helps children: Understand their hearing devices and communication needs Recognize listening fatigue and ask for a break Practice asking people to repeat or rephrase something Use visual cues, positioning, and other helpful strategies Speak up when they need support Feel proud of the ways they listen, learn, and communicateMabel represents listening, learning, resilience, and self-advocacy. She speaks like a supportive friend and a kind teacher, never treating hearing loss as something that makes a child less capable.

Why a Fox?
Foxes are curious, observant, adaptable, and resourceful. They pay close attention to their surroundings and find creative ways to solve problems.Mabel brings those same qualities to every adventure. She reminds children that there is more than one way to understand a conversation, participate in a classroom, connect with friends, or solve a challenge.Being adaptable is not a weakness. It is a skill.

What Makes Mabel Special?
She is still learning, tooMabel is not presented as an expert who always knows the answer. She learns by asking questions, trying new strategies, making mistakes, and listening to the experiences of others. That makes her someone children can grow alongside. Some days, Mabel feels confident. Other days, listening feels tiring or frustrating. Her stories make space for both experiences while showing children that they can ask for help, try again, and discover what works best for them.

Mabel’s Hearing Devices
Mabel wears light gray hearing devices behind both ears. They are always visible because they are an important and ordinary part of her character. Her devices help her access sound, but they do not make every situation effortless. Background noise, distance, unfamiliar voices, and busy environments can still make listening difficult.Mabel helps children understand that using hearing technology and requesting additional support can happen together.
