Make a shared video easier to follow, and practice asking for captions.

Ages 6–11 · 5–10 minutes · read together · Explore what fits your family

Mabel, the green fox wearing gray hearing aids, reads a book.

Start with Mabel

Mabel’s friends want to watch a short video. Before it starts, they check what everyone needs to follow along. Mabel asks for captions.

Try it together: pause before play

Choose a short, age-appropriate video with an adult. Find the captions control together. Check that the words are readable and that important sounds or speakers are clear. You can pause and talk, sign, draw, or write about the story.

Captions can help some people. Someone else may need signed content, a different explanation, or another way to enjoy the activity.

Words you can borrow

“Can we turn on the captions before we start?”

“Could we pause? I missed that part.”

For grown-ups

Preview captions for accuracy and reading level. Do not assume that turning them on gives every child full access. Ask what works and prepare alternatives.
