Mabel, the green fox wearing gray hearing aids, walks along.

Start with Mabel

Mabel is trying a new art club. She feels excited and has a few questions. A grown-up helps her find out what the first day will be like.

Try it together: my three-part plan

On a page, draw three boxes: Before, During, and After.

  • Before: What do I want to know? Choose one question, such as how instructions will be shared.
  • During: Who can help if I miss something? Choose a trusted adult together.
  • After: What worked well? What should we change next time?

You decide what you want others to know about you. A grown-up can arrange support without asking you to explain everything to a new group.

Words you can borrow

“Could you show me the instructions?”

“Who can I ask for help?”

For grown-ups

Contact the organizer ahead of time about communication, captions or interpreting when needed, noise, sightlines, and breaks. Confirm arrangements rather than assuming support will be available.

Take it with you

New things are easier when we have a plan and someone in our corner.
