A busy beginning

Mabel’s friends gathered near the big tree. Everyone had an idea for a game.

“First we—” said one friend.

“And then—” began another.

Mabel smiled, but she had lost track of the plan. She wanted to play, too.

A little question

“Could we take turns?” Mabel asked. “I want to understand the game.”

Her friends paused. One explained the first step. Another drew a little map in the dirt.

“Oh! We start by the tree,” said Mabel.

Ready together

They checked that everyone knew the plan. Then they were off.

Mabel’s question had made room for her. It had helped the whole group get started, too.

What helped the friends understand each other? What could they try next time before the game begins?
