What is a cochlear implant?
Hearing aids and cochlear implants are two different tools that some people use to access sound.

Two tools, two ways of working
Hearing aids make sounds louder. Mabel wears hearing aids in her stories.
Cochlear implants use a sound processor worn outside the head and a part placed inside during surgery. Together, they turn sound into signals that stimulate the hearing nerve.
Children can use different tools and communicate through sign, speech, writing, pictures, or a combination. Ask what helps someone join in, and give them room to answer in their own way.
Make room for every kid’s ideas
In Mabel’s activity, her friend Rowan uses a cochlear implant and has an idea for a mural. The group can take turns and share a picture of the plan so everyone has a way to contribute.
